AR Mobile App UI redesign project.

In Summer of 2018, Justin Copenhaver, CEO, and AR developer for Urality, hired me to examine the early interface and user experience of a platform he was building that would use AR for location based events and experiences. At this time Urality’s business model and target user-base was in early concepting phase. Justin intutivity perceived the need to optimize the user flows he had created up to this point. He also requested support for research regarding competitive platforms and discernment about market fit for the platform he was developing.

Upon accessing the Urlaity platform I was very impressed by the myriad features and use cases Justin had conceptualized. I evaluated this platform via Testfligtht on iPhone 7.

My client had a modest budget and wanted to optimize our time together - target areas he knew would have the most impact within 3 sprints.

Scope

Key goals we agreed to:

  • Reduce time to accomplish key tasks

  • Simplify navigation system and make elements more intuitive

  • Create component style guide (consistent design system)

To accomplish these goals, I pursued the following process :

  1. Agreed upon scope for 2 sprint period. Each sprint lasted about two weeks.

  2. Create Trello board with client, identified primary use-cases.

  3. Document end-to-end flow of major use case, in this process I documented opportunities for simplicity and clearer communication to user.

  4. Identify issues and prioritize each issue; considering what would be the most valuable to work on.

  5. Wrote five primary user flows.(screens below)

  6. Enhanced navigation system to guide user through sequential workflow.

Best practice

I suggested simple in-person usability testing to assess if my assumptions would resonate with small sample of users.
My client, did not feel this was feasible given confidentiality constraints.

Market research I compiled helped
Urality’s business
model evolution.

While providing interaction design services , I was downloading, signing up for, reading about other AR apps and creating a catalogue for my client within a Trello column. This contributed to my client’s efforts to differentiate his platform from existing ones and also seeking to learn from the critiques reviewers had of those platforms.

As a key deliverable for our last sprint, I created a first pass at a vision deck for Justin to take to potential investors. (Slides in this page are excerpts from this deck.)

I spent about three months working on this project and remain grateful for all that I learned and the opportunity to contribute a stepping stone in the journey of what has now flourished into a very sophisticated event-based augmented reality app.

“The contributions that Tim provided for my business regarding user experience added value outside of just the primary role of UX design; Tim's strength is in implementing a strategy that is extensible to future user experience that achieves consistency and clarity over single one-off solutions that address an immediate design need." - Justin Copenhaver
